Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is designed to relieve pain and restore function to your tooth
With modern dentistry, root canal therapy is now usually no more painful than a routine filling treatment. Depending on the condition of your tooth, this treatment can be completed in one or two appointments.
This treatment is necessary when the pulp—the soft tissue inside the root canal of your tooth—becomes either inflamed or infected. This infection or inflammation can have a number of causes such as:
- Deep decay
- Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
- A crack or chip in the tooth
- An injury which causes no external damage.
If this inflammation or infection is not treated, it can lead to an abscess forming at the root of your tooth
How do you know if you need root canal therapy?
If you are suffering from any of the below symptoms we recommend you visit your dentist for a check-up: signs you might need root canal therapy include:
- Pain
- Prolonged sensitivity to cold or heat
- Tenderness to touch
- Discolouration
- Swollen gums
These are just some of the potential symptoms; it’s also important to keep in mind that sometimes no symptoms are present.
How does root canal therapy save your tooth?
Once a tooth is fully developed it doesn’t need the pulp to survive. This treatment removes the infected or inflamed pulp and cleans the inside of the root canal. Once this is done, the root canals are filled and sealed. Your next appointment is when a dental crown will be placed on your tooth to protect and restore it to full function.
